Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Affairs (SOCHUM) is one of the six main bodies of the United Nations General Assembly. It deals with human rights, fundamental individual freedoms, and other such human civil liberties. The lack of basic women’s rights in certain regions of the world is a cause of alarm that has faced increased pressure by the international community. Cultural and religious traditions have been primary causes of this different approaches to this question. The act of humanitarian intervention has been controversial in its applications throughout history.  Historical, cultural, regional, and political factors have all played a role in states’ viewpoints on this matter.
